January 2010 Events and Activities

The SAIL Pathfinder Club had a busy start to January. Our first meeting, Sabbath afternoon January 9, we discussed how to reconcile the fossil record with the biblical account of creation, and then visited the Texas Natural Science Center at UT Austin to see many of the fossils we had earlier talked about. This was a club outing, and part of the Fossil honor and the Explorer class work. On January 13, at our first Wednesday meeting of the year, the units elected their new Captains and Scribes for the second half of the Pathfinder year. Matthew began teaching Model Rocketry, going over the safety and science of rocketry, and those who had already earned the honor reviewed Morse Code and Semaphore in preparation for work on the Communications honor. January 16 the Pathfinders took up a special offering for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) relief work in Haiti. The SAIL club had worked on two of the ADRA honors in November, and was able to share with the Church information about the history and mission of ADRA and some of the actions ADRA is taking in Haiti. That evening, the club sponsored the annual Austin South SDA Church Chili Cook-Off, a favorite activity (and a fun fund-raiser), full of friendly competition and great tasting Chili.  And January isn't over yet. Our Bible Achievement team will be taking part in a practice competition January 23. On the 24th we head down to San Antonio for the Central Texas Honor Fair (our club will be teaching Model Rocketry, Christian Citizenship, Bones, Muscles and Movement, and Brain and Behavior). And finally, at our next Pathfinder Club meeting on the 27th, we will be practicing drill, and building rockets and practicing sending signals in Morse Code.
